CHAPTER 25

Clay drove toward St. Augustine and the home of the soon-to-be heart donor, Jesse Conner. He drummed the top of his steering wheel with his fingertips to some seventies rock. Thanks to his phone call, posing as someone from the man’s insurance provider, he had all the information that he needed.

CHAPTER 26

Jones stayed at the house with the two officers from patrol waiting on a warrant to search the property. With the guy running and us securing the boat in question, we had enough cause to search the premises. We planted the man in interview box one back at the station. Our marine unit was in the process of pulling the boat from the water and getting it back to our station’s garage to be gone through by forensics.

“Has he said anything?” Bostok asked.

I stood in the observation room, looking through the glass at our man cuffed and linked up to the table. He sat forward in the chair, staring down at the shackles around his wrists.

“Nope. We got an ID off of him, though. It is this Thomas Thomas guy. The boat’s tag numbers match up.”

“Nice name,” Bostok said.

A rap came on the observation room door, and Hank walked through holding a bottle of water. He held it up. “Peace offering,” Hank said.

Hank had called me when we were out at Mr. Thomas’s residence after listening to the voicemail that I’d left him. He was at the aquarium on the channel, looking at some video, but pulled the plug on it when I told him that we were bringing the guy back to the station for an interview.

“Did you see anything else from the aquarium’s video feeds?” I asked.

Hank shook his head. “They didn’t look like they caught too much of the channel. I can go back out later or start again tomorrow if we need more footage.”

“I think we may have what we need in that regard,” I said.

“Are we ready?” Hank asked.

“Yeah, let’s see what he has to say.” From the desk near the captain, I grabbed a file with the stills of the boat from the video, and we left the observation room. I followed Hank next door. Mr. Thomas looked up at Hank and me as we approached him at the table. I pulled out a seat and sat next to Hank across from Mr. Thomas.

“Mr. Thomas,” I said. I set the file that I had on the table and clasped my hands after saying his name. “Care to tell me the reason for your afternoon run?”

He grunted but said nothing.

“Not much of a talker, eh? I have something that I want you to check out.” I flipped open the cover of the folder and pulled out the blown-up footage of his boat on the channel. I placed it on the table and pushed it toward him. I saw him look down at it.

“See, that is your boat, with two men on deck, dumping a body in the Ybor Channel. Care to comment on that?”

He leaned back and looked toward the stark white wall at the back of the room.
